Shelli Tench initially entered the Garner Walmart with $50 in her pocket, intending to use the remaining funds to purchase underwear and t-shirts for a nearby hurricane relief shelter. Trench was determined to spend her $50 on clothing because the shelter had informed her that although people could take hot showers at their facilities, they typically lacked clean clothes to change into. When she arrived at Walmart, she asked Jeff Jobes, the manager, if she could get a discount on the clothes. She was taken aback by his response.

Jeff didn’t give me a break when he learned about the suffering of the people at the shelter. Rather, he gave me a shopping cart and one of his colleagues, Alex, and instructed her to load it onto him. I was able to deliver 254 pieces of clothing to the evacuees at the Garner High shelter after spending $1,251 because Jeff, the manager, demonstrated his love for his community by his actions. But the story doesn’t end there. Jobes texted Tench the following morning to inquire about any additional supplies the shelter might require for the 400 hurricane victims. Jobes responded to Tench’s message by saying, “Give me 30 minutes and then come see me.”

Jobes and Alex were assembling stacks of donated items for the shelter when Tench arrived at the Walmart. They gave case after case of apples, oranges, bananas, Ensure, Boost, Gatorade, Cliff bars, pastries, bread, and cookies instead of bags of fresh fruit. My van was completely packed. The Walmart employees in Garner are world changers, and the love and support they have shown is incredible. Tench says.
