As I was boarding my flight to Portland, I got out of my wheelchair and headed to my seat with the help of a kind flight attendant who carried my bag. The pilot was standing nearby, watching.
Just as I settled into my seat, he asked me, “Were you in the military?”
I replied, “Yes.”
Then he asked, “Afghanistan, 2010?”
This time I paused, surprised. “Yessss…”
That’s when he told me he recognized me—my face, my injuries. He said he had always wondered if I survived.
His name is Marc Vincequere. He flies for United now.
And here’s the wild part: he was the pilot who flew me out of Afghanistan. ❤️
