I bought my son, Adam, a brand new coat yesterday. With snow in the forecast and his old coat from last year barely covering his wrists (hello, growth spurt!), he needed a new one. He wore it to school for the first time today.
When I picked him up, his sister, Jozlynn, mentioned, “That kid is wearing Adam’s coat.” I assumed she meant they had the same coat, and the conversation moved on.
Later, while I was giving my youngest a bath, Jozlynn brought it up again, saying a boy had Adam’s coat because Adam had given it to him. I asked Adam what coat he had given away and why. His response touched my heart: “My friend didn’t have a warm enough coat to go outside today. I had my old coat in my locker that’s too small for me, but it fit him, so I gave it to him so he could play. I told him to keep it because he had to go outside and ride the bus home, and I didn’t want him to be cold.”
In moments when I wonder how we’re doing as parents, I’ll look back on this. I am amazed and so proud of my little man, thinking about his friend and making sure he stayed warm. Thinking about it tonight has brought me to tears.
Adam had only received his new coat the night before, and with the weather being unpredictable, it’s hard to know what they’ll need outside. This isn’t about shaming—it’s about celebrating the fact that our little ones are looking out for each other!
