Today I dropped our son Dashawn off at the mall, and as I was driving away, I witnessed something that made my heart overflow with pride.
He’s only 13 and was excited to spend his last day of summer hanging out with friends. But before he even made it inside, he noticed an elderly woman nearby. Without a second thought, he walked up to her, offered his help, and gently took her bag of food so she didn’t have to carry it alone. I watched from the car as she smiled and motioned for him to walk beside her, and in that moment, I knew exactly what he was doing. He was making sure she felt safe and cared for.
A woman standing close by even stopped, tears in her eyes, to compliment his kindness. My heart just about burst. To say we’re proud of the young man he’s becoming doesn’t even begin to cover it.
Dashawn lost his father when he was just a baby, but thanks to his incredible mom Nicky and his loving grandparents Kiwanis and Charlie, he’s grown up surrounded by compassion, respect, and love for others, especially the elderly. From the first day I met him four years ago, I knew there was something truly special about him. He’s always been the type to step up and help those in need without ever being asked.
It really does take a village, and ours couldn’t be prouder of the young man he’s becoming. Nobody more than his mom, who has poured so much heart and guidance into raising him. ❤️
