Working at a frozen yogurt shop in a town where folks aren’t always the friendliest, I wasn’t expecting much when a woman came in ordering a huge cup of yogurt — about $15 worth. She reached into her purse but suddenly realized she had forgotten her wallet in the car. She asked if she could quickly run and grab it, and I said sure.
While I waited, another woman who was there with her kids walked up to the register and started digging into her own purse. I asked if I could help, and she said, “I want to pay for that lady’s yogurt.”
I was surprised and curious, so I asked why she wanted to do that. She simply said, “I felt like doing something nice for someone else today.”
When the first woman came back, I told her what had happened. Her face lit up with the biggest smile — she looked like she might start crying. She turned to the generous woman and said, “Thank you so much. No one ever does anything nice for me, and this really came right when I needed it.”
We asked why she said that, and she shared, “Today is my birthday.”
Immediately, everyone in the shop joined in singing “Happy Birthday.” The birthday woman then told the kind stranger, “I make homemade jewelry. Let me make you a pair of earrings as a thank you.”
Their smiles were infectious, and the whole shop felt brighter. I even asked if I could snap a picture of them, and I captured this sweet moment of genuine kindness.
This little story reminds me that kindness is still very much alive in the world.
