“Just One Thing”

It was 2:00 a.m., and the rain was coming down so hard that I had to pull into the nearest gas station.

I was tired, overwhelmed, and felt like I was lost. Sitting in my car, I searched through my coat pockets, hoping to find something to wipe the tears that wouldn’t stop falling.

Instead of a tissue, I found an old Tootsie Roll.

I didn’t know how long it had been there, but I decided to eat it anyway.

Right there, under the bright light of the gas station, I felt a small spark of hope.

In that Tootsie Roll, I found “Just One Thing.”

I decided to find one thing each day that could bring me hope and joy.

I started doing this 15 years ago, when I was a tired new mom working the night shift at our local TV station. I needed something simple to remind myself to keep going.

“God, please help me find just one thing to bring joy today,” I would pray.

And He always did.

The world feels heavy right now, and it’s hard to explain in words. But I know I can find hope in the smallest moments.

And I am committed to finding that hope every day.

Last night, I didn’t sleep well, so I woke up early, poured myself a cup of coffee, and sat at my desk to get some work done.

My son was up early too.

“Mom,” he asked in his sweet voice, “Can I read my book in your office while you work?”

A book. Coffee. Sunshine coming through the window. And my favorite 6-year-old.

Hope and joy.

What’s your “just one thing” for today?
