After two years of applying, interviewing, and facing rejection after rejection, I started to believe the hateful messages I was getting. Maybe I would never be able to work as a bedside nurse again. Just when I was about to give up, I had one last interview for a position in the Mother/Baby Unit at a local trauma center. After so many rejections, I thought they would see my disability and turn me away. But to my surprise, when I mentioned my wheelchair, the response was nothing like what I expected. They said, “I don’t see why being in a wheelchair would affect your ability to give good care… plus, you’re the perfect height to catch babies!” 😉

I was shocked. I kept thinking, “They must have made a mistake,” and “Maybe I misunderstood them.” I didn’t tell anyone until I had my orientation schedule in hand. But it was real, and I didn’t mishear anything. On Monday, I will start my orientation as a night shift nurse in the Mother/Baby Unit, and I will be the hospital’s very first RN on wheels. 🤗 I still keep thinking I’m going to wake up from this amazing dream. Please pray for me as I shift from trauma nursing to a whole new specialty! Stay tuned for more updates as I return to bedside nursing, ON WHEELS! 😷♿️♥️
