This is a story about love, hope, and destiny coming together. Looking back, I believe everything happened exactly as it should—none of it was accidental. I was meant to be at that school at that moment so I could meet David. In his words, “We were meant to be together, Yoder.”
David was 13 when I met him, in the self-contained class at Thompson Sixth Grade Center where I work as a paraprofessional. Though I didn’t work directly with his class, I often spent my free time playing with them during recess.
One Friday, a PE coach quietly told me that David was about to be put on an adoption website. Without thinking, I blurted out, “We will adopt him.” The more I reflected, the clearer it became—I couldn’t risk him not finding the right family. Why not us?
