For the first time in their lives, Arthur and Bernardo were able to look eye to eye, following a 23-hour surgery that separated them after being joined together by head since birth.
Born in 2018 in the remote state of Roraima, Brazil, these craniopagous twins shared the skull and part of the brain tissue, a condition so uncommon that it occurs in less than 1 in every 2.5 million births.
For almost four years they lived connected, without the possibility of seeing each other.
But everything changed thanks to a team of more than 100 specialists and months of surgical training using virtual reality, which allowed it to recreate its shared anatomy in detail.
After nine interventions, they culminated in a historic operation that lasted almost an entire day.
Waking up, Arthur and Bernardo finally turned their heads and saw each other like never before.
