Towards the end of 2023, a crane operator became a symbol of bravery.
When a high-rise building was consumed by fire, trapping a worker on the brink of disaster, Glen Edwards acted. He maneuvered a crane basket through thick smoke and strong winds, putting his own life at risk to rescue the trapped man. The man climbed in, overwhelmed with gratitude as Edwards lifted him to safety.
The world celebrated, then moved on. But Edwards was secretly fighting cancer, which was spreading even as he performed the heroic rescue.
When a small charity asked what he wanted, Edwards didn’t ask for material possessions. He simply requested: “New flooring and a shed.”
Instead, they gave him much more—appliances, bedding, and a fishing trip—recognizing that some heroes deserve more than basic needs.
Now, as Edwards battles his illness, the man he saved wrote to express his thanks—a reminder that true heroism is selfless and doesn’t seek reward.
