When Janelle and K first moved into the smaller apartment, Janelle already knew K wasn’t going to like it. It was simple, cramped, and didn’t have the space he wanted. On camera, he acted like he was just an afterthought there since it was so small and wasn't going to fit his belongs. But Janelle softened it with humor. They joked that it was like being newlyweds starting out with very little.
In that space, neither Janelle nor Savanah got up when K walked in. He had to ask Savanah for a hug. He awkwardly teased, “You gonna sit there and look at me?” and Janelle chuckled at the exchange. He hadn't snubbed Savanah during Christmas and her birthday yet, so this distance may come from him only showing up to visit in the evening and staying through the night in the trailer instead of fully moving in.
Later, Janelle had a newer, bigger apartment. She said it felt like a sanctuary, largely because she hadn’t shared that one with K the way she did the other. K made his feelings clear in a confessional: “It’s her apartment,” “It’s not ours,” “It’s not about me and her,” and “I honestly don’t know why she’s showing me, other than, well… our daughter lives there.”
Despite that, Kody admired this newer place. It was the one he complimented, but he wasn’t moving into it, like he seemed to want. Savanah had to open the door for him and hugged him there. This time he greeted her with, “How’s it going, sweetheart?” and she didn't seem as awkward with him. They didn't seem as close as they used to be, but it was somewhat better despite taking place after he shunned her during Christmas and her birthday. Janelle did say he was doing better with Savanah at that point by taking her out just the two of them.
The contrast is pretty interesting:

The smaller apartment = the one he complained about, but also the one he called “our place.”

The newer apartment = the one he admired, but distanced himself from, calling it “her apartment.”
Later, Kody even wondered if Janelle only moved to the nicer place after splitting with him, as if it took their breakup for her to finally get a place that was just hers.
