The Pride of Caring for Others
Today I heard it again: “You work cleaning asses.” It’s not the first time, and probably not the last. But I feel the need to speak up—loud and clear—because I am proud of what I do.
Yes, I help people with the most basic needs: I clean them, cut their nails, wash their hair, dress them, shower them, feed them, and care for them in every possible way. In short, I take care of PEOPLE—human beings who can’t do these things on their own and who deserve dignity, respect, and love. If someone wants to reduce that to “wiping asses,” so be it. I’ll still be proud.
What bothers me is the way people say it with contempt, as if my profession is less valuable than others. Not everyone is suited for every job. For example, I could never work in a career where lying is part of the game, like some bankers do—and yet that’s considered prestigious. Meanwhile, caring for others—something deeply human and essential—is looked down upon.
Here’s the truth: most people who mock us may never need anyone to “wipe their ass.” But if life ever brings them to that point, I hope they find someone like me, or one of my colleagues—people who will care for them with patience, humor, and kindness, while making sure they keep their dignity and quality of life.
So please, think twice before using that phrase with scorn. Because one day, you or someone you love might need exactly the care that we provide. And when that day comes, trust me—you’ll be grateful.
