At the World Championships in Budapest, USA’s Anita Alvarez sank to the bottom of the pool.
Her coach, Andrea Fuentes, noticed right away that she had been under far too long. Without hesitation, fully clothed, Andrea dove in and pulled her to safety. Anita was unconscious, unable to move, and without Andrea’s quick action, she could have drowned.
Andrea knew her. She was watching for her. She recognized the danger and acted instantly.
That moment has stayed with me.
Because it raises a question we should all ask ourselves:
👉 Who are the people in your life who will notice when you’ve been “under” too long?
👉 Who will dive in after you when you’ve lost the strength to keep swimming?
👉 And maybe most importantly—can someone count on you to be that person for them?
Life’s waters can get rough. We all need someone willing to notice, and if necessary, dive in.
