Amby Johnson, 38 weeks pregnant, was already stressed when she was pulled over. She knew the reason: her license plates were expired. The new ones were in her car, but she hadn’t been able to put them on, with her baby on the way and her husband away in the Navy.

She expected a ticket and a lecture. Instead, Officer Jim Allen listened to her explanation. “I can’t do it,” she said. “I’m almost nine months pregnant, and my husband’s away.”

Officer Allen didn’t scold her. He told her to wait, then knelt in the hot sun and changed the plates himself.

He smiled, wished her well with the baby, and left. Overwhelmed, Amby could only thank him.

Later, she wrote, “Instead of giving me a ticket, he gladly helped. He was so nice and didn’t make me feel bad. Thank you, Officer Jimmy Allen.”

Officer Allen saw it as simply showing compassion. “We’re human too,” he said. “And we need to have compassion.”

A simple traffic stop became an act of kindness. Officer Allen chose compassion over authority. And sometimes, that’s all we need.
