Cynthia Erivo is set to depict Jesus in an upcoming production of “Jesus Christ Superstar,” which has created an uproar on social media.

Several people — including Christians — spoke out in dismay. They said they feel casting a woman who identifies as queer to portray their savior is deliberately insulting to their faith.

“With all due respect, and humbly submitted, Cynthia Erivo is too BALD, BROWN, and BI to play Jesus,” Pastor John K. Amanchukwu Sr., whose website describes him as an influential preacher, author, and activist, wrote on X.

“Casting a woman as Jesus Christ is an intentional form of blasphemy that Hollywood would be fuming over if done to certain other religions,” he added.

His post was met with plenty of agreement, with X users saying they think it’s a direct assault on Christianity as a whole. They said they view it as blatant mockery.
