Barby Keel, 90, opened her animal sanctuary in Sussex, UK, back in 1979, with just three animals. Now, she houses more than 600 animals including chickens, cats, pigs, goats, and dogs.

The Barby Keel Animal Sanctuary offers homes for abused, abandoned, and unwanted animals. Barby works with a team of dedicated volunteers to keep the sanctuary running smoothly.

She notes that many children visit, as well as people who live alone who meet up at the sanctuary to enjoy the animals and each other’s company.

Despite surviving cancer three times, Barby still tends to the animals daily.

“It’s exhausting sometimes,” she commented. “But then a little face pops up or I get a nose nudge, and I remember exactly why I do this.”

Throughout her life she has helped over 10 K animals. While some animals are rehomed, most remain at the 12-acre sanctuary to live out their lives peacefully.
