Big Brother 27’s final days have provided some of the most exciting gameplay of the season, but viewers are still going to be disappointed with the series after the reveal of the Big Brother Mastermind’s identity. Throughout Big Brother 27, viewers have been curious who the masked menace running the BB house has been. While some disliked the gimmick, there’s an element of fun to the twist.
The Big Brother Mastermind has spent the entirety of the season throwing curveballs into the mix of the BB house, and while some of them were lackluster, others changed the course of the game entirely. Rather than having the BB team amorphously run the game from the behind the scenes, throwing the Mastermind into the loop was an interesting choice for production.
Throughout Big Brother’s run, there have been some twists that viewers loathed, others they’ve loved, and some they’ve enjoyed a moderate amount. The Mastermind, as it stands, is likely somewhere in the middle of the scale, but finding out who’s been behind the mask and manipulating the game makes the twist more of a sigh of disappointment than a score.
The BB Mastermind Was Revealed To Be Dr. Will Kirby
Morgan Pope & Ashley Hollis Revealed His Identity On Live Feeds
While Morgan Pope, Ashley Hollis, and Vince Panaro, the final three houseguests left in the game, have run the gamut of conversation topics, when the live feeds returned after the second part of the Final HOH competition, something new was abuzz in the house. Morgan and Ashley, despite being instructed not to, couldn’t stop talking about Dr. Will Kirby being revealed as the BB Mastermind.
Dr. Will, the winner of Big Brother 2 and final four competitor on the first iteration of Big Brother All-Stars, has been a long-time figure in the BB game. While his gameplay will likely always be unmatched on Big Brother, Dr. Will hasn’t been part of the modern era in a game sense. Instead, he’s taken a different role to modern BB.
Dr. Will has pitched in to host the jury roundtable for years, and in other seasons, has played pivotal roles in competitions that have changed the game. While he’s not a Big Brother player anymore, Will’s stayed close to the CBS series. For fans, seeing Dr. Will can spur mixed emotions, especially because of the way he interacts with other BB alumni.
Although he’s a figurehead who’s represented the game for years, many have struggled to enjoy Dr. Will in a BB context. The show often relies heavily on Will being a mastermind figure, but after having been away from the gameplay of BB for nearly two decades, many struggle to feel he’s qualified to comment on the current state of Big Brother.
The reveal of Dr. Will as the mastermind, while a nod to the past eras of Big Brother, may not provide the fresh perspective that the show needs moving forward. Instead of introducing new strategies or players, Big Brother chose to bring back a familiar face, potentially stalling the show’s evolution. While the Mastermind is only a gimmick, it indicates BB’s overall direction
Big Brother’s Mastermind Reveal Should Be A Wakeup Call
The Show Should Be Looking To Innovate, Not Reminisce
Big Brother continues to captivate audiences each season with its twists and turns, but it’s essential for the show to innovate and adapt to the changing landscape of reality television if it wants to continue. As one of the longest-running reality TV competitions, nostalgia has its place on Big Brother, but relying too heavily on the past can hinder the future.
The introduction of new twists, like the Big Brother Blockbuster, and fresh gameplay strategies is key, but leaning on the past when those twists unravel often hurts the show more than it helps. Dr. Will being the Mastermind may not matter much, but it signals the lack of understanding Big Brother has for its fans. Moving forward, the show should look ahead instead of glancing back.
Big Brother 27’s finale airs Sunday, September 28 at 8:30 p.m. EDT on CBS.
