Cryptic social media post has Lions fans worried about Jameson Williams' trade rumors Morgan Moriarty •

We’re just a couple of days away from the NFL Draft. Instead of stressing over who they might pick, Detroit Lions fans are more worried about one of their star players. That’s because there have been rumors flying around Lions star receiver Jameson Williams.

A recent report stating that Williams could be on the trade block, paired with Williams himself posting some interesting things on social media, have Detroit fans on edge.

Could Detroit part ways with its 1,000-yard receiver from last season? Here are the latest rumors regarding Williams, as well as what he’s posted on social media.

Jameson Williams trade rumors

It all started on Tuesday morning when Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated wrote his rundown of what he’s hearing for all 32 teams ahead of the draft. At the end of his Lions blurb, he added that “some in NFL circles” believe Williams could be traded. Williams is entering the fourth year of his four-year, $17.4 million rookie deal with the Lions, though there is a fifth-year option that the Lions are expected to pick up.

He was drafted in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the Lions, who took him 12th overall. He eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for Detroit last season, accounting for 58 receptions for 1,001 yards with seven touchdowns, averaging 17.3 yards per reception.

Along with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Williams is one of quarterback Jared Goff’s favorite targets. Detroit seemed unlikely to trade Williams before giving him a new deal — that is, until Williams himself weighed in on social media.

On Tuesday, Williams posted the following on his Instagram story, and has since unfollowed the Lions on IG:

Lions general manager Brad Holmes said late last month that Detroit was likely to exercise Williams’ fifth-year option, but didn’t think an extension was in the works.

“We’re still taking it as it goes,” Lions GM Brad Holmes said of Williams’via the Detroit Free Press. “Look, his fifth-year option, it’s looking likely that we’ll go ahead and just pick that up. But in terms of extension, again, there’s a lot of extensions that are hopefully coming, but it’s just one that you just don’t know what’s going to happen from a financial standpoint cause a wide receiver, it’s expensive. It’s very expensive.

“So, look, these are good problems,” he added.

To add more fuel to the fire, Charlie Campbell of Walter Football said the Lions wouldn’t trade Williams for “anything less” than a first-round pick:

It sure seems unlikely that Detroit would move on from Williams less than a year after his breakout season, but it’s clear that the trade rumors have hit a nerve with their star receiver.

We’ve seen wilder things happen on draft night, so it will be fascinating to see if the Lions make a move with Williams in play. Detroit is set to pick 28th overall in the first round and 60th overall in the second round.
