Ella Williams, better known by her stage name Mme Abomah, a woman of extraordinary height (she was billed as being 7’6″ or around 2,29 m tall) who became an international celebrity in the late 19th century.
Ella was born in a family of former slaves and gained fame when she agreed to tour Europe as an “African Giantess” with Frank C. Bostock in 1896. Bostock promoted her as a member of the legendary Dahomey Amazons, a famous all-female fighting force. He also gave her the stage name Mademoiselle Abomah.
During her 30-year career Mme Abomah toured various parts of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South America and Cuba. She was also known for her expensive and extensive wardrobe and was usually called “the best dressed tallest woman in the world”.
