I asked a friend in his 70s what changes he feels as he grows older. His answers touched me deeply, and I felt they were worth sharing:
1. After loving my parents, siblings, spouse, children, and friends—I’ve finally learned to love myself.
2. I’m no longer “Atlas.” The world does not rest on my shoulders.
3. I don’t bargain with fruit or vegetable sellers anymore. A few extra coins won’t hurt me, but they might help them pay for their child’s school.
4. I leave generous tips for waiters. They work much harder than I do, and a small gesture can brighten their day.
5. I stopped interrupting elders when they repeat stories. Each retelling is a walk down memory lane for them.
6. I’ve stopped correcting people, even when I know they’re wrong. Peace matters more than perfection.
7. I give compliments freely. They lift others, and they lift me too. And if you receive one, never turn it down—just smile and say, “Thank you.”
8. I don’t worry about a crease or stain on my shirt anymore. Character shines brighter than appearance.
9. I walk away from people who don’t value me. They may not know my worth, but I do.
10. I don’t compete in the rat race. I’m not a rat, and I’m not in a race.
11. I’ve stopped hiding my emotions. They make me human.
12. I’ve learned it’s better to drop the ego than to lose a relationship. Ego leaves you lonely, but relationships keep you connected.
13. I live each day as if it might be my last—because one day, it will be.
14. Most of all, I do what makes me happy. My happiness is my responsibility, and it’s a choice I can make every single day.
