Frankie Montas has a UCL tear that will require surgery — and very likely the full Tommy John surgery, which would take him out for 2026.
Montas will obviously pick up his $17 million 2026 option. His replacement, the phenomenal spinmeister Nolan McLean, came up not a moment too soon.
Jonah Tong was a smart call-up, too. Tong throws 96 to 97 mph with two great breaking balls and a dynamic changeup. Scouts also say he is an “80 human” on the 20-80 scout scale. (Our Mark W. Sanchez basically confirmed that at the Futures Game.)
The Mets appear to have gotten a megabargain at the $226K full slot price for a seventh-rounder. Tong was somewhat hidden as a Canadian in a COVID year, but the Mets found him playing in Georgia. Credit area scout Marlin McPhail and scouting execs Marc Tramuta and Tommy Tanous.
