Michael Sulsona, a Vietnam War veteran who lost both legs in 1971 after stepping on a landmine, had been waiting two years for the Department of Veterans Affairs to replace his aging wheelchair. While shopping at a Lowe’s store in Staten Island in July 2014, a bolt on his wheelchair suddenly snapped, leaving him stranded in the aisle.
Without hesitation, the three employees, David, Marcus, and Souleyman, rushed to help. They gently transferred him to a store chair and immediately began working on repairs. They stayed nearly 45 minutes after closing time, replacing broken parts using supplies from the store. A fourth employee named Sal had called them over to assist. Their teamwork gave Sulsona a functioning chair to take home and a powerful reminder of everyday kindness.
After Sulsona’s story went viral, the VA finally delivered his long-awaited new wheelchair to his home in New York. He now uses the repaired one as a backup. “This isn’t about criticizing anyone, ” he said. “It’s about three guys who did the right thing when someone needed help.”
