On Christmas Eve, a local woman received a shocking call: “Hi, you don’t know me, but I have your brother.”
Her brother Joey, 64 years old and mentally disabled, works at The North Park Theater. His sister believes he went there on Thursday, became frightened, stayed overnight, and later tried to walk home.
That night, a kind woman named Sha’Kyra Aughtry heard someone crying for help. Her boyfriend, Trent, went outside and found Joey stuck in a snowbank. He carried him inside their home, where they discovered Joey was nearly frozen. His socks had to be cut off, his pants were frozen to his legs, and plastic bag straps were stuck to his hands.
Sha’Kyra, a mother of three, cared for Joey as if he were her own family. She fed him, washed his clothes, wrapped him in warm blankets, and comforted him. She even FaceTimed her relatives with Joey to distract him from the pain, which amazed him. Without her kindness, Joey would not have survived.
His frostbite was so severe it looked life-threatening. Desperate for help, Sha’Kyra posted on Facebook, and strangers quickly responded. They cleared her driveway and carried Joey, wrapped in a blanket, into a truck to take him to the hospital. Sha’Kyra went with him, holding his hand and reassuring him: “No one is going to hurt you, honey.”
Doctors confirmed Joey had fourth-degree frostbite. He is now being treated in the burn unit at ECMC.
Joey’s sister says without a doubt, Sha’Kyra Aughtry saved her brother’s life. What she and Trent did was an extraordinary act of love and compassion.
This is a story unlike any other truly remarkable.
God bless Sha’Kyra.
