This is Darren. He lives in California. He is 28 years old and shares his life with Little Miss, his beloved dog. His friend is full of energy, and brings Darren great joy.
It is May 2024. Little Miss runs around the house, then suddenly collapses and does not get up. Darren takes her to the vet. His dog has had a stroke. She will have difficulty walking and it is not known how long she will live. The doctors say it will be very demanding to take care of her, they remind Darren that there is the possibility of putting her down. Darren takes his friend in his arms and takes her home.
Little Miss has lost her vivacity, but the love that she and Darren have for each other is unchanged. As they did before, they go out for a walk every morning and Darren supports his friend every step of the way. Every evening he fills the tub with warm water, then takes Little Miss in his arms and gently immerses her. He caresses her as the warmth relaxes her tired muscles. Then he puts her to sleep, and whispers that everything will be okay.
Their days are made up of these small and precious rituals. Darren doesn’t know how much time his friend has left. He continues to be by her side as he has for sixteen years. Little Miss is not a broken object to be thrown away, every moment with her is a gift. I want her to know how much she is loved.
