Today, I was sitting at Taco Bell when a group of young boys walked in, laughing and talking loudly as they came in, clearly craving tacos. But as they sat down at a table, I noticed that only one of them had actually ordered something. The other three just stared at the menu, looking hungry. They started talking about school, girls, and all kinds of other random stuff.
Then, out of nowhere, a man who had been sitting in the corner stood up and walked over to their table. The boys seemed a little nervous, shrinking back when they saw this big guy, about 6’5″. But then, the man surprised me with what he said. “Do y’all want a slushie? Come on up here, let me get you guys something.”
The three boys quickly jumped out of their seats, excited, and ran up to the counter to order slushies. But the man didn’t stop there. He offered to pay for their food too. He even asked the cashier to ring it up before they started making it since he needed to leave soon. After he paid, he waved goodbye to the boys, not expecting anything in return.
I quietly nodded at him and smiled, letting him know I noticed his kindness. He waved back and walked out the door, heading towards his semi-truck parked nearby. The boys, all smiling, turned around and yelled, “Thank you!” as he left.
Today, kindness and love looked like a 12-pack of tacos and three Starburst Freezes.
