When I was just 8, and my sister was 12, we lost everything in a car accident that took both our parents. In that moment, childhood ended for us. My sister stepped into shoes no child should ever have to wear—she became both my protector and my guide.

She took over my dad’s restaurant with a strength that amazes me even now. She worked tirelessly, making sure I never felt the crushing emptiness of being orphaned. She scolded me like a mother, cared for me like a mother, and loved me like only a mother could.

Today, she’s 18 and I’m 14. I help serve at our restaurant, while she makes sure every corner is spotless and welcoming. Together, we keep our parents’ dream alive. People who meet us often sigh, saying how sorry they feel for us. But what they don’t see is the happiness that lives inside our little world.

We don’t pity ourselves anymore. We laugh, we work hard, and we stand side by side. I don’t just have a sister—I have someone who became my mother when life left me without one. And that makes us stronger than anything we lost.
